About
the Congregation
History. The Havelock Christian Church grew out
of a series of evangelistic meetings conducted by Bethany Christian
Church during the summer and fall of 1904. The first home for
the congregation, a large frame building located between 60th
and 61st streets on Ballard Avenue, was dedicated in February
of 1908. In the early 1960's the congregation decided to move
to a smaller, more flexible brick structure which has served
the community since 1964. This building reflects the congregation's
desire to serve the many needs of the church family and the surrounding
area. Doors are opened to a variety of activities, from regular
worship services to Christian education events and to community
events.
Beliefs. The Bible is the authority for our faith.
Each individual is responsible to God for his or her interpretation
of the Bible and the practice of the faith.
"Where the scriptures speak, we speak. Where the scriptures
are silent, we are silent." --Thomas Campbell, 1809
Two ordinances are practiced:
- Baptism by immersion as it was
done in the New Testament.
- Participation in the Lord's
Supper each Sunday as Christ called us to do.
Members are
received into this fellowship
through the confession that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of the Loving God" or by transfer of membership from other
churches.
Membership
has its Privileges. The
congregation embraces local democratic control of its own affairs.
Membership allows one vote on all vital issues affecting the
life of the congregation.
Membership
has its Responsibilities.
The congregation is an organization of volunteers. Each volunteer
works as God gives them the time, talent, and resources. Tithes
and offerings are requested in proportion to your thankfulness
for God's gifts to you. Committees serve local and world needs,
such as worship, social action and world outreach. Elders and
the Diaconate serve the church with spiritual guidance and dedicated
physical service.
