Pastor's Ponderings
As you read the Contact this month, the
season of Advent is upon us. Advent is the time of preparation
for Christ to return to earth. Also, during this time, we are
beginning the preparations to welcome the Christ Child into our
midst on Christmas Morning. Some of us dread the holiday season
of shopping, baking, and the cleaning to prepare our home for
family and friends. Others of us love the season of hope, peace,
joy and love that brings people together to celebrate and rejoice
at the birth of Christ. Wherever you find your emotions and thoughts
this year, take time to reflect upon the gift that God has given
to each one of us, his precious son, Jesus Christ.
I encourage each one of us to take time
to read the gospel stories of Matthew and Luke in order that
we receive the message of love, as well as the message of hope
for the future for all the world. As we read these stories, reflect
upon these questions. How does this story transform my life?
Do I bring hope, peace, joy and love to those around me? What
would God have me do to show compassion to the least in the kingdom
of God? If we will spend time in reflection and prayer, then
God will be able to give us dreams and visions that we can place
into action so that the Kingdom of God becomes a reality for
all people in the world.
May God grant you a Blessed Advent and
Christmas,
Pastor Giovanna Arnold

A Word About Our
Honorees
Birthday Folks
Steven Niemeyer
grew up in the Havelock Christian Church. He is the youngest
of Betty and Alvin Niemeyer's sons. A graduate of Lincoln Northeast
and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Steve is an Investigator
with the Lincoln Police Department, where he has worked for about
12 years. He and his wife Kamy, a pharmacist at Walgreens, are
parents of 3-year-old Dylan.
Alta Perkinton
is a long-time, faithful member of HCC. She has been active over
the years in worship, women's activities, weddings and funeral
dinners, and many other special events. Alta is mother to Ed,
Bob, Pat, Mary, and Kathy. She has 29 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition, Jerry Cunning considers Alta to be his "second
mom," and she has provided encouragement and support for
many of us as we grew up in the church.
Kristina Nimmich
is very active in our church family, regularly attending worship,
providing leadership in the youth group, and helping frequently
with care of the younger children in the nursery. She also has
a beautiful alto voice, and has shared her musical talent and
her speaking ability with the congregation on several occasions
for Youth Sunday. Kristina is a senior at Lincoln Northeast this
year and a member of the marching band.
Les Beaman
has returned to HCC after completing his active ministry in several
othercongregations, and we're so glad he's back. Les was pastor
at HCC from 1979 to 1988. During his pastorate, Les also served
an active role in the Lincoln community as a police chaplain.
A native Oklahoman, Les graduated from Northwest Christian College
in Oregon and completed hisseminary education at Lexington Theological
Seminary in Kentucky. He has served pastorates in Arkansas, Nebraska,
Missouri, and Illinois. He is welcomed back to the Lincoln area
by hisdaughters Bonnie Chambers and Sheri Urkoski and their families,
as well as by the HCC family.
Mark Yost,
the younger son of Dori and Duayne Yost, grew up in the HCC family.
He was active in Sunday School, worship, and youth activities.
He was a long-time employee at Cushman Motor Works until the
plant in Lincoln closed its doors. Since then, Mark has started
his own Yard and Handyman Service. He and his wife Colleen are
parents to Zachary and Cora. Mark provides regular lawn maintenance
at the church, and he and the family participate in various special
events at HCC.
Laneicia Buckman
spent her childhood years at HCC. She was active in Sunday School,
Junior Choir, youth activities, and worship. Laneicia's family
are active members at First Christian in Lincoln, so she and
her son have been attending church there in recent years. Laneicia
recently graduated from Lincoln Northeast and is currently a
student at Southeast Community College.
Shannon Peacock
has been part of our church family for a number of years. Music
is most assuredly one of Shannon's gifts, and she has favored
us with beautiful solos and duets with her dad for Talent Night,
Christmas Eve, and other special services. Shannon is a graduate
of Lincoln Northeast and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
She is the daughter of Curt and Anna, and works at T A G, an
insurance processing company in south Lincoln.
Ardelle Boardman
is celebrating a December birthday. She has been part of the
HCC family for a long time. She is active in worship, Talent
Night, and other special events. Ardelle is mother to Brent,
Mark, Craig, and Sherin, and has five grandchildren. She and
Clovis Boardman are sisters-in-law (as well as good friends),
and she works at the Nebraska Department of Roads with Jean Uarich
and Joyce Wells.
Ami Lyn Hefner
is coming up on birthday # 5. She has been a part of the HCC
family since she was born. She is very active in Sunday School,
Kids' Choir, worship, and all kinds of special events at the
church. Ami is everybody's friend and helper. She loves to dance
and sing. She already knows the Lord's Prayer, the Doxology,
and many of our church hymns. Her mom is Julie Hefner and Grandma
and Grandpa are Deb and Joe Herman.
Dan Davis
became part of the HCC family in the 1990's, and we continue
to claim him, even though he's been pastor of the Hallam United
Church of Christ for 10 years already. Dan helped HCC with a
strategic planning process a few years back, and he has blessed
us with some of his beautiful wood-working for our craft sales.
We heard recently that Dan's wife Jan is recovering from two
broken ankles, and Dan is spending a lot of time helping her
get around. Dan and Jan have a son and a daughter.
Bonnie Hartley
became a part of the Havelock family several years back. She
was active in worship and special events. Bonnie shared her artistic
talents with HCC in decorating for the Mother-Daughter luncheon
and in creating the beautiful picture cake for our triple 50th
wedding anniversary celebration for the Buells, Niemeyers, and
Yosts in June of 2002. Bonnie, along with husband Al, does a
lot of ministry with people who need specialencouragement.
Duayne Yost
has been active at HCC for many years. He has served as Moderator,
Vice Moderator, Property Chair, Worship Chair, Treasurer of the
Builders Club, member of several Search Committees, head of the
Visitation Ministry, Elder, Lay Leader ... (and those are just
the offices I can remember). He's active in Sunday School, worship,
and about every special activity we have. He and Dori have enriched
our church life immeasurably with their artistic talents and
dedication. The Yosts have a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren,
and a dog named Murphy Sue.
Jarred Bickford
is approaching birthday #3. He's been a part of the HCC family
since birth. In fact, he attended Christmas Eve service on his
way home from the hospital. He is active in Sunday School, Kids'
Choir, worship, and special events. He is our youngest member
of the Diaconate-in-Training program, and he regularly takes
up the offering during Sunday School opening time. Jarred's mom
is Hope Bickford, and his grandparents are Mary and Rick Bickford.
Julie Hefner
has been part of the HCC family for many years. Over the years,
she has been active in youth activities, worship, and special
events. Julie is daughter to Deb Herman and mother to Cody, Ami,
Mikey, and Emily. We're especially proud of Julie as she continues
her studies toward her nursing degree at Southeast Community
College, along with working and being a busy mom.
Anniversaries
Sharon and Stewart Jordal are coming up on anniversary # 42. Stew tells
me Sharon caught him when he was looking the other way. (Sharon
wasn't on the line to tell her side of the story.) Both are from
York, NE. Stew came to Lincoln to attend UNL, and Sharon followed
after she graduated two years later. The Jordals have been active
in the HCC family since coming to Lincoln. They are parents of
Lisa and Lori, and grandparents of AJ, Zach, Taylor, and Dylan.
Bonnie and Al Hartley met in Falls City, NE. Bonnie worked for a music
store and had a beautiful organ in her home. Al was working in
sales at that time, but he missed having music in his life. Bonnie
invited him over to enjoy some organ music, and the two have
been making beautiful music together ever since. Al and Bonnie
have generously shared their talents with the HCC family on a
number of special occasions.
Cindy and Max Nelson celebrate a December anniversary...or is that
two anniversaries? As I recall the story, this is the anniversary
of the first wedding, the one for which Cindy had to do all the
work.. (That was the deal -- Max said he'd marry Cindy if she
planned the whole wedding.) The next year, they had another wedding;
and this time, Max did all the planning. It must have worked,
because they've stayed married all these years. The Nelsons served
the Havelock church from 2002 through 2005. Max is currently
serving the church at Elwood, NE, and Cindy teaches at Morrill.
The Dales
are anticipating anniversary # 44 this year. We met as part of
a joint college-age youth group where Bethany Christian brought
most of the boys and Havelock Christian had the girls. We called
our group FAD (Fellowship of Adult Disciples), and more than
a few marriages came out of that group, including Joyce and Jack
Rosecrans, Carolee and George Johnson, Donna von Forell and Jim
Zimmerman, and ours. Some of us from the old FAD group still
get together from time to time. The Dale children are Mark and
Sarah, and our grandchildren are Pierce (PJ), Chase (Spud), and
Ellie.

December 1, 4:30 - 7:30 -- Pastor
Giovanna, Pastor Bob, Rachael, and Zachary are inviting members
of HCC and members of Southview Christian to an Open House at
their home on Friday, December 1. We're invited to drop in for
cookies and conversation any time between 4:30 and 7:30 pm. Parking
is limited in the residential area around 3519 "C"
Street, so car pooling is suggested where possible.
DECORATING PARTY, Saturday, December
2, 10 am -- Come and join in the
fun of decorating the sanctuary for Advent. There's much to be
done, and this is always a fun day. Folks are invited to bring
a sack lunch and enjoy a light meal together as the decorating
comes together.
Advent Meditation Booklets are available -- The Devotions for Advent 2006 are here, and
you are invited to pick one up for your Advent meditations.
Dedication of Gifts for the Food Pantry -- As is our custom, our gifts for the Northeast
Food Pantry will be dedicated on the first Sunday of the month,
Dec. 3rd. This is an especially important time of year to remember
those less fortunate than we are. Let's help the chancel to overflow
with canned goods and food items again, as it did in November
with our gifts.
SENIOR CHRISTMAS DINNER, Saturday, December
9, Noon -- Come and enjoy the traditionally
elegant Senior Dinner. This event is hosted by the Builders Club.
The dinner will be turkey and dressing with all the trimmings,
catered by HyVee. There will be a free will offering to help
underwrite the cost of the meal. Our entertainment will include
Christmas music and Bingo. Please bring an inexpensive gift (under
$5) or white elephant gift wrapped festively for the Bingo prizes.
Jack is asking that we let him or Duayne Yost know by Sunday,
Dec. 3rd if we're planning to attend, so he knows about how many
meals to plan. Phone numbers are:
Jack Rosecrans 464-3330
Duayne Yost 464-1667
Men's Chorus to Hold Short Organizational
Meeting on Dec. 9th, 11:30 am --
The Men's Chorus has been invited to present special music at
the Songfest Worship on Sunday, Dec. 31st. We'll meet to plan
our practice schedule at 11:30 am on Saturday, Dec. 9th, before
the Senior Christmas Dinner begins. All men who enjoy singing
are encouraged to participate. This is a fun group, and practices
will be short. Be thinking of songs you'd like to sing.
CHRISMON WORSHIP, Sunday, December 3,
10:45 am -- While we have traditionally
placed the Chrismon (Christ Monogram) decorations on the tree
during the Sunday School hour, this year we will lift up the
significance of the beautiful white and gold symbols as part
of our worship service on the first Sunday of Advent. Each symbol
will be explained; and together, we'll celebrate the giving of
the infant Christ child as these symbols are placed on the tree
in the sanctuary.
COMMITMENT SUNDAY, Sunday, December
10, 10:45 am -- In recognition
of all our blessings and reflecting on the exciting ministries
at Havelock Christian, we'll bring our financial pledges for
the 2007 church year to place in the offering tray during worship
on Dec. 10th. A special dedication of our commitments is planned.
CAROLING PARTY, Sunday, December 10,
3 pm -- It's time for Christmas
Caroling again!! My personal favorite part of the Christmas holidays,
complete with jingle bells, is scheduled to begin at 3 pm on
Sunday afternoon, Dec. 10. We'll begin at the church, travel
to our various destinations, and return to the church for a light
supper. Please bring a treat or two to share.
Dress Rehearsal for the Christmas Pageant
planned at 10 am, Dec. 16 -- We'll
make sure all the costumes fit and everyone knows where to stand
for the December 17th Christmas program. Be sure to be at church
by 10 am on Saturday morning, Dec. 16th. Bring your scripts!
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM, Sunday, December
17, 10:45 -- "Here We Come
to Bethlehem, " the annual Christmas pageant, will be part
of the worship service (taking the place of the sermon) on Christmas
Sunday. Everyone will want to be there -- not only to worship
and participate in the program, but to re-live a very old HCC
tradition following the program. You'll just have to be there
to find out what it is!
CHRISTMAS OFFERING, Sundays, December
10, 17, 24 -- Go Tell It on the
Mountain! This is the refrain that so often rings in the hearts
of Christians everywhere during the Advent season. Christmas
is a time for reflection, celebration, and renewal -- this leads
all of us to want to tell the good news to all whom we encounter.
The Christmas Special Day Offering is one way that we as Christians
can "tell it on the mountain," or share our excitement
for the season, for God's love, and for one another with the
world.
The Christmas Offering specifically
supports the work of regional ministries
as they help congregations with planning and pastoral care, empower
leaders through workshops and networking, strengthen ministry
through the search and call process and training, licensing,
and ordaining of ministers, grow faithful disciples through camps
and other youth programs, and reach out to others by establishing
new churches and working to share in mission with our partners
in ministry. Every dollar given in Nebraska stays in Nebraska
to support our local ministries.
CHRISTMAS FELLOWSHIP, Sunday, December
24, 10 am -- Instead of our regular
Sunday School classes, we'll gather for fellowship at 10 am.
Everyone is invited to this special time. Bring a sample plate
of your Christmas goodies to share. Our Christmas Eve morning
worship begins at 10:45 am.
CHRISTMAS EVE COMMUNION SERVICE, Sunday,
December 24, 9 pm -- The church
family will be at worship at this special time -- family members
are encouraged to attend; dress is casual. This is the time when
we pause to remember the reason for our celebrations. Come enjoy
the quiet and warmth of this special time.
CHRISTMAS DAY, Monday, December 25 -- Celebrate the gift of God's Son. Enjoy being
with your families, as we remember the birth of our Lord.
Pastor Giovanna on vacation Dec. 25
- Jan. 2 -- The church office will
be closed for the holidays, and Pastor Giovanna will be on vacation
for a week. If anyone needs pastoral care during that time, please
call Mike Yost, Moderator (464-0955) or Jean Holt, Chair of the
Elders (525-7574). Others on call include the other Elders: Roger
Hammons, Anna Peacock, Dori Yost, and John Dale.
SONGFEST WORSHIP, Sunday, December 31,
10:45 - You won't want to miss
this great day. The HCC Men's Chorus will be providing special
music for the day. Pastor Giovanna will be taking a well deserved
day of rest, but we'll have some great music and a lot of spirit
as we prepare for the new year.
FYI
Our family is growing!! A special warm welcome to new HCC members Peg
Hutchison, Judy Nyhoff, and Glen and Bobbi Buchanan.
The church family is invited to support Judy on Sunday, December
3rd, as she symbolizes her commitment through the sacrament of
baptism. We're so happy to welcome all of our new members to
the family.
Advent/Christmas Children Sermon Activities: During the children's sermon this Advent / Christmas
season, we have special activities planned for young and old
alike. We will need everyone's help in participation of these
activities. We would like for people to plan ahead for these
special Children's moments.
| On December 3, we will discuss
how the wise men prepared tobring gifts to the Christ Child.
We would like for everyone to bring a gift ot hats, mittens or
gloves, or warm scarves, to place on the tree in the sanctuary.
These will be given to needy families in our city. |
| On December 10, we will be discussing
our blessings. We sould like for everyone to have a piece
of paper with your blessings listed on it to place in a basket
as we give thanks and praise to God. |
| On December 17, we will be talking
about giving thanks for our grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends
that bring joy and love to our lives. We would like to have pictures
to show at this time. Please bring these to share. |
| On December 24, we will be discussing
the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. As an expression of our
love and gratitude, we ask that everyone bring a white wrapped
can or boxed food item to place on the altar. |
| On December 31, we will be discussing
dreams and visions for our lives and the church. We would like
for everyone to write down their dreams for the church and
for our world. These may be written in the form of a prayer.
Bring these to place in a basket for God to bless. |
| On January 7, Epiphany Sunday,
we will discuss that this is the day that the wise men brought
their gifts to Jesus. We would like for people to draw pictures
or write prayers or poems tha describe the gifts we would
give to God. We will place these near the manger. |
Each of these activities will add to the
meaning of Christmas for the children and youth of the church.
Thanks in advance for your help.
-- Pastor Giovanna
Worship Committee requests gifts of
poinsettias -- To help beautify
our sanctuary for Advent, members are asked to donate poinsettia
plants in honor or in memory of loved ones. A sign-up sheet willbe
located on the worship table at the back of the sanctuary where
you can record your gift and the lovedones being honored.
Thank you from Friendship Bridge -- "The Friendship Bridge Fellowship Group
would like to give theHCC family a well-deserved "Thank
You!" for all their help to make the Rummage Sale a great
success. So many wonderful people stepped forward to help fill
all the needs, and we are grateful. $950 will be spent to help
share the love of this church family with the community."
-- Debra Herman
First immigrant family welcomed -- On Wednesday, Nov. 15, Pastor Giovanna, Judi
and Mike Yost, and Anna and Curt Peacock joined the group of
Disciples waiting to welcome the first group of Ukranian immigrants
at the Lincoln airport. The family was amazed and joyful as they
were taken to their first home in America, furnished so nicely
by gifts from Disciples across Lincoln. In addition to the essentials,
there was a toy or gift for each of the children waiting on his
or her bed, a bouquet of fresh flowers, home-baked bread, and
fresh fruit in the kitchen, and a number of other nice welcoming
touches.
Many thanks to all who donated supplies
to help make this warm welcome possible. We're not sure when
the next families will arrive. As soon as we get definitive word,
we will again be gathering bathroom and cleaning items. What
a wonderful opportunity to share God's love.

In Our Church
Family
Our thoughts and prayers continue with
Bobbi and Glen Buchanan with the death of Bobbi's great
nephew, Aaron Peterson, Jr.. Aaron was just 15, and a
student at Lincoln Northeast. Bobbi, your sister and her family
have our deepest sympathy.
We thinking of Alta Perkinton this
month with the death of her sister-in-law, Gerry Perkinton.
The Ralph and Gerry Perkinton family are long-time Havelock residents,
and our prayers are with them in this time of sadness.
Holiday greetings go out to our shut-in
members at this season -- Elaine and Keith Althouse, Don Riblett,
Jim Donaldson, JoAnn Brown, Derald Bickford, Irene Sewell, Beverly
Helmkamp, Alta Perkinton, and Tony and Katheleen Lass.
We hope you're enjoying the lights and sounds of the season.
We continue to keep those who are serving
in the military in our thoughts and prayers. Those with connections
to the HCC family include: Jamie Bevens, Jeremy Bickford,
Missy Bickford, Vern Blackwell, Cody Carlison, Mike Keith, Josh
Markle, and Jake Whitaker.
Others we are keeping in our thoughts this
month include: Rick Bickford, Kylie Cutsforth (a young
child battling leukemia), John Berner Kozak (friend of
Judy Yost), Harold Egbarts (step-father of Mary Bickford
and Debra Herman), Leonard George (friend of Judy Seibert),
Jamie Lynn Peterson (granddaughter of Woodrums), Ralph
Reed (brother-in-law of Mary Reed), Frances Scott
(Julie Seier's mother), and Bert and Milie Turnwall (Judi
Yost's parents).
We're thinking of our friend Brandi
Van Deusen, who is recovering from surgery. We're glad to
hear that you're home, Brandi, and we hope you get to feeling
better soon.
Our thoughts are with Karen and Derald
Bickford this month, as Derald makes a transition to Lancaster
Manor. We're hoping the new care arrangements give comfort to
you both.
Irene Sewell
is in our thoughts as she receives some extra care these days
at Tabitha. We hope you're feeling stronger soon, Irene.
Virginia Woodrum
is feeling better after a scarey allergic reaction to some medication
last week. We're glad you're on the mend, Virginia.
Mikey Hefner ("Bubba") gave his family a scare recently -- he was diagnosed
with pneumonia. We're glad to report that there's some improvement
as of Tuesday. Little sister Emily has been down with an infection
too for several weeks. We hope she's finally on the mend. Grandma
and Mommy are ready for everyone to be better! Now!
We continue to keep Pastor Lesa Eichenberger
of the Verdon Christian Church in our prayers.
How nice it has been recently to have
family members worshiping with us - Pastor Bob, Rachael, and
Zachary Arnold were with us last
week-end, as were Bonnie Chambers and Sheri Urkoski,
with their dad Les Beaman. Mark Dale-Thompson, PJ and
Spud were guests of the Dale family on Nov. 19th, and Peg
Hutchison's daughter-in-law attended church with Peg recently.
We hear that Lori and Mike Yoder, Taylor and
Dylan were in Lincoln over Thanksgiving as well visiting
the Jordals -- sorry we missed seeing them.
And Kudos go to
. . .
George and Maxine Buell for delivering the tremendous load of canned goods
to the Pantry. What a job that was!
Pastor Giovanna
for her excellent classes on stewardship of our time, talents,
and treasure.
Worship Chair Dori Yost for her extra work in preparation for the Advent
Season. Thanks also to Dori and Judy Seibert who are creating
a new banner for the sanctuary.
Moderator Mike Yost and all of the 2006 officers for their good
work over the year.
Roger and the other youth sponsors for their great work with the young folks.
In Closing
Some of the most beautiful scripture passages
we know center on the coming and birth of our Savior. Take time
to read and savor.
Isaiah 9:6-7 - "For unto us a child
is born..."
Luke 1:46-56 - "My soul magnifies
the Lord..."
Luke 2:1 - "And it came to pass in
those days..."
Luke 2:8 - "And there were in the
same country shepherds abiding in the field..."
Matthew 1:18 - "And she shall bring
forth a son..."
