We
Count Our Blessings
We celebrate the joy of having our family
grow, as Les and Marjorie Beaman transferred their membership
to HCC on December 10th. It's something of a homecoming for Les.
He served as the pastor of our congregation from 1979-1988. Marjorie
maintains her ties with her home congregation in Oklahoma, but
joins our family as well. A special warm welcome to Les and Marjorie.
It was a privilege to participate as church
family at Judy Nyhoff's baptism into Christ on December
17th. We rejoice in the opportunity to surround her with love
and support in this significant decision in her life.
Roger Hammons'
Health is Improving
Whatever mysterious infection that struck
Roger last December following his kidney transplant seems to
have found him again this December. What started as the cold
and sore throat so many of us were fighting in early December
turned treacherous for Roger, and he ended up in the hospital
fighting for his life again. In spite of the doctors' best efforts
to isolate the cause, they're still not sure what it is. But
from life threatening circumstances, Roger has again emerged.
He was transferred from the hospital to Madonna on December 27th
to recover his strength. He's almost back to normal again and
ready to be back doing the work of the Lord. We praise God for
this gift of healing once again. We continue to keep Roger, Barbara,
Nikki and Eric, Jessica and Marc in our thoughts and prayers.
It's been another long, tough haul.
Advent Activities
Bring Joy
From our Chrismon worship service on December
3, through the Christmas Eve service, HCC has been filled with
members, family, and guests this year. The Senior Christmas party
on December 9th featured beautiful decorations, joyous singing,
delicious food, and good fellowship. A merry group of carolers
brought joy to our homebound friends on December 10th. The Christmas
program on December 17th displayed once again the many talents
of our members; and a number of our families had out-of-town
family and friends with them for the candlelight Christmas Eve
service. We rejoice in God's gift of his Son coming as a little
child to remind us of the hope, joy, peace, and love that God
intends for his people.
Joyful News from
our Friends at Verdon
Duayne Yost
received a call from our friends at the Verdon church, sharing
the good news that 53 people were in attendance at their Christmas
Eve service! They remember the encouragement from HCC and other
congregations when their attendance was very low. The congregation
has new life and is actively engaged in sharing the good news
of God's love.
Pastor's Ponderings
At the rummage sale in November, a visitor
asked some of our members what our church believed. This sent
the members calling for the pastor to explain and answer the
visitor's questions. This reminded me that many people do not
have a clue as to what the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
believes, nor do they even know that we are a denomination founded
in the United States. This visitor's questions got a few of us
to talking about what we know about our heritage and our beliefs
as a church. Thus, I began to think about what is the best way
for all of us to learn about our history and understand the characteristics
of Disciple's theology, Christology and church traditions
the answer preach a series of sermons about our basic beliefs.
Therefore beginning Sunday, January 14 and ending on Sunday,
February 16, I will begin discussing the basic beliefs of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in a sermon series called
"Basic Beliefs of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)."
Together we will learn what we as a denomination believe about
Trinity, Community of God, Ministry & Mission, Scripture
& Faith, Baptism, and Communion. Be sure to mark your calendar
to come and learn who and what we believe as Disciples.
Finally, I want to thank everyone for all
your participation and help with the Advent/Christmas Season.
I choose not to list names for fear that I would forget someone.
Please know that I love all of you and your willingness to be
servants of the church. We are a truly blessed congregation with
hard workers.
Glad to be your pastor,
Giovanna

A Word About Our
Honorees
Birthday Folks
Born in Nebraska City, Lester Woodrum
moved to Havelock with his family at an early age. He graduated
from Havelock High School in 1940, a member of the varsity football
team and lettering in track. He began working at the Burlington
shortly after high school, and when he retired after 44 years,
he was Assistant General Foreman of the material yard. He joined
the Army in 1942, serving in the European theater from 1943-1945.
He and Virginia were married when he was home on leave in August
of 1943. After the war years, Les also did some moonlighting,
working at the Joyo Theater as projectionist for a number of
years. The Woodrums have four children, Susan, Peggy, David,
and JoAnn, all of whom live in the Lincoln area. There are 8
grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Over the years, Les
has been active in Scouting, PTA, and served on the Burlington
Credit Union Board. He's been active at HCC for a long time,
helping with many yard clean-up and church cleaning projects
and participating in many other special events. According to
the great pictures in the Dec. 31 Celebrate, Les is celebrating
birthday #85.
Mark-Dale Thompson was the first baby born in Clarke County, Iowa
in 1967. He spent his first 10 years in Iowa and Missouri, where
John was serving churches, with frequent visits to the Walters
and Dale grandparents in Lincoln. In 1977, we moved to Lincoln,
where Mark graduated from Lincoln Northeast and the University
of Nebraska. In search of new horizons, he moved to Lawrence,
Kansas in 1990, where he has been ever since. In Kansas, he completed
another college degree, this time from Baker University in business
and accounting. He works for a family rental firm in Lawrence
and is very active in the Lawrence Wesleyan Church. He is dad
to Pierce and Chase and is devoted to his sidekick Larry the
Dog and the five cats who complete the family.
Teresa Miller
was born in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School. She
met Steve on a blind date that Steve says was the best thing
that ever happened to him. Steve joined the Navy in 1968, but
he came back to marry his sweetheart in 1970. Teresa was able
to be with him in California for about a year during his Navy
career. After returning to Lincoln, the youngsters came along
- Eric and Gina. Teresa had one of the hardest but most rewarding
jobs of all she was a stay-at-home Mom. In addition to
raising the children and providing a Christian home for not only
the Miller kids but their friends, Teresa also cared for both
of her parents until their deaths. Once the children were raised,
the grandchildren arrived, and now Teresa is taking care of Marissa
(age 8), Joshua (age 5), Owen (age 2). Teresa and Steve have
been part of the HCC family for several years now. Steve is chair
of the property committee, and he and Teresa have spent countless
hours working on the prayer garden and the other beautiful plantings
around the church.
Wilma Staberg
was born in Falls City, NE and moved to Lincoln with her family
when she was a child. She started school at Belmont Elementary,
but soon transferred to Havelock when her father began working
for the Burlington. The Staberg family lived across the street
from Wilma's on Platte Ave., and the oldest brother Elmer found
his way to Wilma's door before they graduated from high school.
The two were married in 1938. Elmer spent all of his working
life at Gooch Mills, where he worked as truck dispatcher. Wilma
stayed home and raised three sons - Larry, Neil, and Dwayne.
The Staberg family moved to the house on Colfax when the boys
were young, and in the 1960's, they were instrumental in locating
the site for the current church building. Wilma will be celebrating
her 90th birthday with an open house on Sunday, January 7, from
2-4 at Legacy Terrace. She has six grandchildren and six great
grandchildren, with another one on the way.
Dori Yost
was born in Lincoln and went to school at Huntington Elementary
and Lincoln Northeast. While at Northeast, Dori was a member
of the Girls' Glee Club. Her first date with Duayne was for his
Junior/Senior Prom. They were engaged a year later when Dori
graduated from high school and were married in 1952. In the years
before the children were born, Dori worked at the Lincoln News
Agency. When the youngsters - Mike, Sheri, and Mark - came along,
Dori stayed home to take care of them. Later, she worked for
Montgomery Wards for 13 years, and then for Gateway Bank (which
became Vistar, then Norwest, and now Wells Fargo) for 20 years
until her retirement in 2000. In addition, she and Duayne have
taught ceramics over the years, both in their own shop for awhile
and at the Senior Center. Dori also does lots of handwork for
the Yosts' annual boutiques. There are seven Yost grandchildren.
Dori has been part of HCC for many years, and she contributes
in so many ways teaching Sunday School, active in women's
work, choir, serving as Worship Chair, Special Events Chair,
Chair of the Diaconate, Elder, member of Builders Club, member
of Friendship Bridge, and active in practically all special events.
Ron Uarich
was born in Elizabeth NJ, where he grew up and graduated from
Thomas Jefferson High School. While searching for a college,
he came across information about Doane College in Crete, NE;
so he took and chance and came west. He graduated from Doane
in 1970. He taught for a short time and then enlisted in the
Air Guard, where he spent 20 years until his retirement in 2003.
He is now working at Offutt Air Force Base in a civilian capacity
doing aircraft maintenance. He and Jean met through Jean's sister
Joyce in August of 2002, and it was magic. Ron began attending
church with Jean and joined HCC in the fall of 2002. None of
us will forget the Sunday morning when he proposed to Jean at
the end of the worship service, with all of us as witnesses.
We counted down the months until the wedding in August of 2003,
and we were privileged to be part of the renewal of their vows
the following year. Ron has been a part of the Friendship Bridge,
a Member of the Diaconate, sings in the Men's Chorus, has served
as Lay Leader, and participates in many special events. If we
listen carefully to the voice of Santa Claus who visits HCC,
we might hear a familiar NJ accent. Ron has a brother in Beatrice
and a nephew preparing for a career in the public power industry.
He is delighted to be part of the ready-made family that Jean
brought to their marriage.
Claudien Egbarts
was born in Elizabeth, Colorado. Her family moved to Lincoln
when she was a child. Her father, Harold Marshall, worked for
the Lincoln Public Schools. On October 1, 1955, she was married
to Eugene Turek, and two daughters blessed the family - Mary
and Debra. The family was very active in HCC as the girls were
growing up, and we have been so blessed with them as part of
our church, along with their families - the Bickfords and the
Hermans. During the years at HCC, Claudien was involved in women's
work, choir, and was a Sunday School teacher. She always delighted
in helping with the Christmas program. We are reminded of Claudien
and Gene every year as we set up the big Christmas tree, which
was a gift in memory of Gene. Claudien now lives in Fairbury
with her husband Harold Egbarts. She returns to HCC often for
programs and special events involving her children, grandchildren,
and great grandchildren. In her new church home in Fairbury,
she is active in women's work and helps make quilts to assist
in mission efforts overseas.
Dwayne Peacock
is the older son of Anna and Curt Peacock. Dwayne grew up in
Lincoln and graduated from the Job Corps in Chadron, NE. Dwayne
and his wife Ida attended worship regularly at HCC during the
1990's until they moved to Bennet, NE. The Peacocks have three
children - Shayne, Destinee, and Nathan. Dwayne and the family
now live in Falls City, NE, where Dwayne works as a welder.
Peg Hutchison
was born in rural Colorado and moved as a child to Sidney, NE.
There she graduated from Sidney High School in 1941 and met her
future husband Carl. She tells me Carl fell down at the skating
rink and ended up in her lap. It must have turned out all right,
as they were married in 1945, just as Carl was completing 3 *
years with the Army Corps of Engineers. The Hutchisons were married
on Christmas Day at Sidney First Christian Church. Carl's first
business was a plumbing and heating business in Curtis, NE. Later,
Carl managed bowling alleys in Curtis and Crete. When the family
moved to Lincoln, Carl again opened a plumbing and heating business.
Peg stayed home and raised daughter Peggy and son Carl, Jr. Later,
she worked for the Better Business Bureau in Lincoln. Peggy now
lives in Papillion and Carl, Jr., a graduate of UNL, is the Purchasing
Agent for the University of Nebraska. Peg has been a part of
the HCC family for nearly 20 years and recently transferred her
membership from the Sidney Christian Church. She enjoys worship,
Bible Study, and special events. She was a member of the Search
Committee that called Pastor Giovanna.
David Barnes
grew up in the HCC family. His parents, Dean and Eva Barnes,
were long-time members of Havelock Christian. David is a "Timothy"
of the Havelock Christian Church, meaning that he is one of our
own young people who went into the ministry. David began his
learning about ministry at HCC under a very good teacher, the
Rev. Merlin Dana. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, after
returning from the service, David served as youth minister at
HCC. He chose Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University
for his seminary work and graduated in 1964. (Editor's note:
the Barnes provided a welcoming presence for the Dales when we
arrived in Ft. Worth for John to attend Brite in 1963 and have
continued to be good friends through our years in the ministry
and beyond.) David served churches in Texas, Iowa, Utah, and
Colorado. He is now retired, and he and his wife Jenny live in
Grand Junction, Colorado.
Ellis Willadsen
was born in Lincoln, spending his early years in the College
View area of Lincoln. Later, he moved with his family to Greenwood,
NE. The Willadsen family has seven children. The parents used
an interesting naming convention for their children. The first
child's initials were A and B, the second one's initials are
C and D, Ellis's are E and F, and they continue through #7, Marie
Nanette. (We understand that sister Marie is now with the U.S.
State Department, working in Oslow, Norway, scheduled soon to
move to Hong Kong.) Ellis graduated from Ashland High School.
He attended UNL in the 1970's, where he met Diane (Westling)
on a blind date, and the two were married in 1976 at HCC, where
they were very active until their move to Greenwood. Ellis spent
much of his working career at National Crane in Waverly. He is
now retired. Diane continues teaching 4th grade with the Elmwood/
Murdock School District. The Willadsen's daughter Amy, a graduate
of UNK, is a Deputy Sheriff with the Lancaster County Sheriff's
department.
Frances Young
was born in Havelock, the sixth child in a family of seven. Her
dad, Joe Young, worked for the Burlington. Frances tells me that
her mother enrolled her in the Cradle Roll at the First Christian
Church of Havelock when she was a month old. (That's a piece
of history that I didn't know - our church apparently was named
Havelock Christian Church after Havelock was annexed into Lincoln
and it could no longer be called First Christian Church.) Frances
went to Havelock School and graduated from Lincoln Northeast.
After high school, she took a course at Lincoln School of Commerce
(LSC) before becoming the bookkeeper for Sanitary Towel at 20th
and N. After a number of years with the firm, she returned to
school at LSC for another course, after which she took a job
with the Lincoln Journal Star, where she worked until she retired
to take care of her mother Lilly. She has done a good bit of
traveling over the years, both to visit her sister, Esther Morris,
in Fresno, CA, and other family members, and also on various
tours through the bank. She has been to Branson, the Ozarks,
and a number of places in Nebraska and Kansas. At HCC, Frances
has been active in women's work, the Diaconate, choir, Builders
Club, and has served as both Financial Secretary and Treasurer.
Jean Holt
grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln Northeast. She
attended Nebraska Wesleyan for a year and later graduated from
Lincoln School of Commerce. In 1958, she married and moved to
California, and later to Oregon, where she lived for 32 years.
Mostly a stay-at-home Mom, Jean was very active in the Beaverton
Christian Church, where she was a youth leader, taught Sunday
School, and helped with the junior high youth program. She was
elected to the Beaverton School Board, of which she was a member
for 13 years. During that time, she was a part of the school
board's budget committee. Her children are Terry, Richard, Bryan,
and Beverly. She has seven grandchildren. In 1996, she returned
to Lincoln to help care for her mother, Helen Donaldson, and
her brother Jim. Since returning to HCC, she has served as an
elder, Chair of the Elders, and on the Search Committee. She
has worked for the YWCA and continues to work for the Grand Lodge.
She finds many ways to provide ministry, not only through the
church but also through her work and at the cooperative where
she lives.
Scott Cunning
was born in Lincoln. He attended school at West Lincoln Elementary,
Goodrich Junior High, and graduated from Lincoln High. He went
on to graduate from UNL with a degree in Journalism in 2002.
His sport and his passion growing up was bowling, and he won
many awards, as well as scholarships to help with his education.
In 2005, Scott married Anne Huffman from Omaha. The couple lives
in Omaha, where Scott works for X O's, doing sports-related computer
programs. While growing up at HCC, Scott was active in Sunday
School, Kids' Night Out, and Junior Choir. Scott transferred
his membership to Anne's home church in Omaha following their
marriage.
Kate Robbins
was born in Lincoln, and she attended grade school through high
school at Havelock. After high school, Kate married her sweetheart
Bob. While he was in the service, she followed him wherever she
could, so the couple saw a lot of different parts of the country.
Back in Lincoln, Kate worked for Elgin Watch Company for 8 *
years. Later, she went to National Business School in Lincoln
for some additional secretarial training, and spent the next
26 years as the secretary at Norwood Park School. The Robbins'
have one son Michael, who is an engineer for the Burlington-Northern.
Kate's daughter-in-law Hyla is a nurse practitioner. Michael
and Hyla live on an acreage near Martel, NE. Katie's middle name
is "golfing." She, Maxine Gillespie, and June Harman
formed a three-some for golf years ago, and they had so much
fun, their husbands later decided to join them in self-defense.
Their favorite course was Hidden Valley, owned by Carl Dietrich,
a friend of Bob's. Although she doesn't play as often as she
used to, Katie is still out on the course fairly often. She has
been part of the HCC family for a long time. She is active in
worship, has served as greeter for us on many occasions, and
participates in many special events.
Merlin Dana
will be 89 this year, and what an interesting person! He was
born in Geneva, Nebraska. At that time, his father ran a car
shop in Geneva. The family later moved to the country, and Merlin
finished 8th grade in country school. In later years, Merlin
attended Manhattan Bible College, and served the church at Virginia,
NE for three years before coming to Havelock as pastor in 1943.
While at Havelock, Merlin continued his education with courses
in philosophy and religion from Nebraska Wesleyan and additional
training at Cotner School of Religion. Merlin's first wife Merle
died of cancer in 1949. He and Jean were married in September
of 1951. Following Merlin's pastorate at HCC, he became manager
of the printing operation at Notifier Corporation, where he was
employed for almost 30 years. In 1980, the family became interested
in raising rabbits. Since then, raising, showing, and judging
rabbits has become more than a hobby - it is another full-time
business for the Dana's. Merlin and Jean have four children,
five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Anniversaries
Giovanna and Bob Arnold are about to celebrate 17 years of marriage. Giovanna
is from Dallas, TX and Bob is from Houston. Following her undergraduate
degree at TCU, Giovanna continued her seminary studies at Brite
Divinity School. Bob, a graduate of the University of Texas,
was also attending seminary at Brite when they met. The couple
married at Giovanna's home church, Western Heights Christian
Church in Garland, TX. Since their marriage, the Arnolds have
served churches in Illinois, Missouri, Texas, and now NE. Rachael
joined the family while they were in Illinois, and Zachary was
born in Moberly, Missouri. Giovanna picked a special day in the
life of the church (Epiphany) for their wedding so that the two
ministers wouldn't have any problem remembering the date.
Dan and Jan Davis
will be celebrating on January 13th. The Davis' came to Lincoln
a number of years ago when Dan was called to serve on the Regional
Staff of the Christian Church in Nebraska. We were blessed to
have the Davis' as part of our church family for several years.
Dan is now pastoring the Hallam UCC Church, and Jan is a long-time
language teacher at Scott Middle School.

FYI
Christmas Offering stands at $750 Thanks to all who have contributed to the
Christmas Offering for 2006. As you may recall, all of the money
contributed through the Christmas Offering goes to support our
local Region - which includes Dr. Ken Moore and his staff, the
Cotner programs, Kamp Kaleo, youth ministries, college ministries,
men's and women's programs, and much more. If you have not had
the opportunity to contribute to this important offering, it's
not too late. Just mark Christmas Offering on your check or envelope,
and it will go to the right place. For several years now, we've
gone over $800, so I'm hoping HCC can come through again.
2007 Church calendars available If you have not yet gotten your church calendar,
there are some left at the church. If you can't get there to
pick one up and haven't received one by mail, give the church
office a call, and we'll see that you get one. They are very
pretty this year, and you'll think about your church family all
year long.
Church pledges still coming in - Following Commitment Sunday, our Financial Secretary
Joe Herman reported that 12 pledges had been received, with amounts
pledged being up some for most of them. If you have not turned
in your pledge yet, we hope you will do so. Not everyone who
gives regularly fills out a pledge sheet, and that's all right
too. We're grateful for each and every gift. Although finances
are always tight, we have managed in 2006 to meet our obligations,
and we are so thankful for all who give of resources, talents,
love, and prayers in support of the ministry of HCC.
Shorts from the
Board
- Financial picture generally positive.
We're running short on dedicated fund source to make payments
on the copier. Monthly payments are $115.
- New offering envelopes will be ordered
for 2007.
- Giovanna thanked all for participating
in the Advent activities and asked us to remember those in prayer
with problems at this time of year.
- Diaconate schedule still in process -
Gene Seibert will notify members of their responsibilities.
- Worship Chair Dori Yost reported lots
of new things added for Advent decorations. The sanctuary is
beautiful. Decorations will be taken down Jan. 13.
- Graffiti defacing the cornerstone was
reported to police. There's no way to repair damage.
- Funds are needed for youth mission trip.
Youth will be having fund raising events. Payments due in January
to hold slots open.
- New Advent candles purchased with Memorial
funds at a cost of just over $500. These will be permanent -
use oil to burn.
- Thanks to Gene Seibert for doing rewiring
to move computer into Giovanna's office, also for dimmer switches
in the sanctuary.
- Due to Roger's illness, Nikki Hammons
has asked us to search for another person to take care of the
church nursery.
- HCC Scholarships for Second Semester Planned
- For our folks attending postsecondary institutions, there will
be scholarships provided to help out with the cost of tuition
and books. Last semester, scholarships went to Shandra Yost,
Kayla Yost, and Julie Hefner. We are very proud of our students
and are glad to be part of their continuing education.
In Our Church
Family
Our hearts go out to Katheleen Lass
and her family with the death of Tony on December 5. Tony and
Katheleen were had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
Katheleen remains at the Millard Good Samaritan Center.
We send our first of the year greetings
to our shut-in members: Keith and Elaine Althouse, Don Riblett,
Alta Perkinton, Beverly Helmkamp, Jim Donaldson, JoAnn Brown,
Derald Bickford, Irene Sewell, and Katheleen Lass.
We were glad to see many of you on our caroling rounds, but sorry
to miss you, Don and Derald, because of illness at Lancaster
Manor. We hope all these colds and flu are on their way out,
and you'll be enjoying the bright landscape from our new snowfall.
Our thoughts and prayers are very much
with our friends Don and Kay Koch, and Jeremy Koch
and his three young daughters, with the sudden unexpected death
of daughter-in-law, wife, and mother Shana Koch on December
27th. The Koch family is very active at Southview Christian Church,
and both Bob and Giovanna have been providing comfort and ministry
to the family in the last few days. Shana's memorial service
was held at Southview on December 29th. Our prayers are with
Shana's parents and the rest of the family too.
Les and Marjorie Beaman are in our thoughts and prayers with Les's recent
hospitalization. We're glad to hear that he is home now. Take
care, Les.
Roger's doing much better! After just a
short stay at Madonna, Roger Hammons will be coming home
on Friday, January 5th. Thank you all for prayers, cards, and
visits during Roger's illness. We're so glad you're coming home,
Roger!
Our thoughts are with so many of our members
who have been fighting colds and flu during the Advent season.
It's been a bad year already. We hope the snow settles the germs
down so we can all get back to normal again.
It was wonderful to see so many families
together over the holidays. A particularly joyous celebration
was the gathering of all of the Buell family for three
wonderful days together at the Rogers House Bed and Breakfast.
The family worshiped together with George and Maxine for the
Christmas Eve service.
Congratulations to Glen and Bobbi Buchanan
with the birth of a new grandson in early December. The family
traveled to Beatrice to meet the latest family member and reported
that he was just perfect!
Congratulations to Zachary Arnold
on being named to All-City Honor Band for middle-school students.
The Woodrum family enjoyed a visit
with granddaughter Jamie Lynn Peterson over the holidays.
Jamie continues in our prayers as she progresses through her
chemo therapy treatments.
December Kudos

and Don and Verna Bowers; and John and Jean Dale,
in memory of Merlin and Elizabeth Walters and Clyde
and Blanche Dale. (Please, if we missed recognizing someone's
gift, let us know for the February Contact.)
Virginia Woodrum,
who has so faithfully provided treats for the youngsters and
all of us during the coffee fellowship time throughout the year.
Virginia, we sometimes forget to say thank you, but we really
appreciate all of the wonderful treats and the special loving
touches you provide - from May baskets, to treats for each special
day on the calendar, to the ever popular gummy worms for the
kiddos.
Shandra Yost
for her help with the children's times during the Advent season.
Jean Holt, Jack Rosecrans, and Mike Yost who filled in as worship
leaders while Giovanna was on vacation December 31st.
Brandi Van Deusen,
Hope Bickford and Shannon Peacock for their beautiful
solos during the Advent season. Aren't we blessed with wonderful
talent in our church family?
Joe Herman, Judy Seibert, Kristina Nimmich, and Lacy Nimmich who provide such good
care for our little ones during church.
Isn't
it amazing how much
good
we can do when we all work together
through
God's love?
