HCC Calls Pastor Giovanna Arnold

In a meeting called on Sunday, April 2, the Havelock congregation voted to call Pastor Giovanna Arnold to be our installed pastor. Giovanna has been serving as Acting Pastor since mid-November, and we have already been blessed with her caring ministry.
We are excited to welcome you, Pastor Giovanna, and we look forward to a long a fruitful time together.

Installation Service Planned for May 7

The installation service for Pastor Giovanna is set for Sunday, May 7, at 4 pm. The Rev. Dr. Ken Moore will be with Havelock for both our morning worship and the afternoon installation service. For the morning service, Dr. Moore's scripture text will be Acts 1:5-17, 21-26. His sermon topic will the "Greatest Need in the Church Today."

In the afternoon, we will be welcoming Pastor Giovanna's family, friends from other Lincoln and Capital Cluster congregations and other visitors. Dr. Moore will be preaching from Acts 4:5-12, and his message will be, "Who Put You in Charge Here?" The installation service will be followed by a light supper, to which all are invited.
Women's Day Extravaganza Planned

We women aren't exactly sure what to expect the men are being especially secretive these days, but we've all been invited to a special dinner on Saturday, May 6, at 6 pm. We're told that the Men of the Church are preparing a very nice dinner just for us. The fellows would appreciate an RSVP by May 2 (call Gene Seibert at 325-9198 or Mike Yost at 464-0955) if you can attend. This promises to be an exciting evening.

HCC Graduates to be Honored on May 21

Havelock Christian will be recognizing the hard work and achievements of our graduates this spring, with a reception following worship on Sunday, May 21. Those being honored include Jeni Phillips, Judi Yost, Zachary Yost, and Melissa Staberg. Jeni is receiving her Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting from Hamilton College on June 18th. Judy Yost will be awarded her Master of Education degree from Doane College on May 14th. Zach Yost, son of Mark and Colleen Yost and grandson of Dori and Duayne Yost, graduates from Lincoln North Star High School on June 3, and Melissa Staberg, daughter of Larry and Sandy Staberg, and granddaughter of Wilma Staberg, graduates from Southeast High School on June 2nd.

Congratulations to our graduates from your church family.

Pastor's Ponderings

Wow! What awesome experiences have been occurring at Havelock! The Branson Trip was a wonderful experience for all 14 men, women, and youth that went. Each one of us was able to worship God in a new and exciting way. Our Palm Sunday Service, with over 70 in attendance, and all of the Holy Week Events were wonderful opportunities to remember the Passion of Jesus. Our Butterfly Picnic and Easter Egg Hunt was a wonderful event for the life of the church and community, we had over 103 adults and children attend. Then Easter Sunday was a great blessing from the Sunrise Service, to Breakfast, to Sunday School, and finally the Baptism Service of Cody Hefner and Lane Phillips during our 10:45 Morning Worship Service. In attendance that day, we had over 100 men, women, youth and children. We have truly worshiped our God in new and exciting ways.

In keeping with the honoring of the Earth, and our ancestors of the church, the youth planned a day of planting flowers and trees on Sunday, April 23. This was a wonderful way for our youth to learn about caring for our planet and remembering our ancestors in our church family. Our hope is to begin a Memorial Prayer Garden for the Church. We will be dedicating these plants on Sunday, May 28, which is Memorial Day Sunday. If you want to contribute to this on-going project, please contact the church office or Mike Yost.
This has been a wonderful last few weeks, but our church has several more opportunities to celebrate our faith and the life of our church family in the weeks ahead. May events will include honoring the women of the church on May 6th at 6 pm, and honoring our graduates on May 21st.

On a personal note, my installation will be Sunday, May 7 at 4:00 pm. I am very glad and honored to have been called as your Pastor. I hope that we will have many wonderful years ahead as we seek new and exciting ways to worship and serve God in the Community of Havelock.

Your Pastor,
Rev. Giovanna Arnold

Getting to Know our Honorees

Richard Westling and his family have been a part of Havelock Christian Church for many years. Richard was active in youth activities, Scouting, and was a member of the choir for many years. Richard and his wife Lillie have one daughter Libby, who is quite an accomplished artist. Richard works for the Lincoln Aging Agency and enjoys helping elderly folks find the services they need.

Lisa Horak, like many of us, "grew up in the HCC family." She is the elder daughter of Sharon and Stewart Jordal. Lisa, husband Jay, and sons almost-eight-year-old A.J. and six-year-old Zachary live in Phoenix, Arizona. Lisa stays busy home schooling the boys and working with a group of parents who do home schooling. Her specialties are French and mathematics. We remember another specialty of Lisa's, her beautiful flute playing.
Cathy Tudor is the daughter of Helen and the late Harold Tudor. She, sister Gail, and Helen live on Ballard. Cathy has a lovely alto voice and has been a member of the choir over the years. She works for the Nebraska Department of Revenue, enjoys working on her computer, and spending time with the family dog. She and the family have recently been cleaning out the attic and sorting through a lifetime of family "treasures."

Virginia Woodrum has been a member of HCC since the early 1960's. She loves to stay busy and involved, and over the years, she has directed Vacation Bible School, taught Sunday School, sung in the choir, helped with special events, and prepared special treats for the members. Virginia grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Northeast High. When she and Les began dating, Les was already working at the railroad. He joined the Army in 1942, but he came home in 1943 just long enough to marry his sweetheart. Virginia traveled with him while he remained stateside, but she returned to Lincoln when he shipped out for Europe. He came home in 1945, and returned to work for the railroad. The Woodrums settled in Norwood Park and became active in the community. Virginia was a leader in PTA, Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. She got involved in politics to help promote paving districts in Norwood Park and was successful in getting 21 blocks in the neighborhood paved. She worked at the Bob Devaney Sports Center for 18 years, has helped seat folks at Memorial Stadium on game days, works for the Election Board regularly, and is a record-setting blood donor. The Woodrums have three daughters and a son, eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Jessica Hammons is the # 2 daughter in the Roger and Barbara Hammons family. Jessy is a graduate of Peru State College and is currently taking classes for her master's degree in Psychology. She is the Site Supervisor for Early Childhood and Youth Development Programs for Family Service at Humann Elementary School. Jessy and Marc Quy are planning a September wedding.

Daniel Herman is coming up on birthday number 14. He is active in Sunday School, CYF, and serves as a Member of the Diaconate. Dan is an eighth grader at Dawes Middle School and will be headed to Northeast next fall. He enjoys Physical Education and likes playing football. He's a great help to his family Joe and Deb Herman with the younger children. Dan recently enjoyed the CYF outing to Branson.

Walt Switzer and his wife Gerry are both retired journalists. They worked for the Lincoln Star for years before the two Lincoln papers combined to become the Journal-Star. The Switzers were close neighbors to the church for a long time, and Gerry was sometimes called upon as our substitute organist. They live further away in the city now, but they still get back for special occasions from time to time. Walt and Gerry have one daughter, Germaine Lea, who is an attorney.

Stephanie Oziminsky is the daughter of Pam and Robert Wilson and granddaughter of Edna Green. She operates a day-care center in south Lincoln, caring for nine children, including her daughter Megan, who is five and son Joshua, who is three. Stephanie finds time to visit Grandma Edna often and the little ones enjoy coming to Legacy Terrace too.
Judy Seibert is a woman of many talents. Originally from Lincoln, she detoured to Kansas for a number of years with hubby Gene. We're so grateful that she found her way back to Lincoln, and especially to HCC. Judy can organize a big dinner and prepare food for a crowd with seemingly little effort, she designs and makes costumes for Christmas plays with no patterns, she makes padded seats for train cars, she teaches little ones in Children's Church, and furthermore, she's a musician! Judy and Gene have two adult sons and two grandsons and are anxiously awaiting the birth of another grandchild.
Rick Stump has been part of the HCC family for many years. His grandparents lived on Morrill and were neighbors of long-time member Pearl Tincher. Rick's mother Delores attended Havelock Sunday School and church for many years. Rick lives in Hastings, Nebraska. He enjoys fishing and spending time outdoors.

Glenna Burgeson was active at HCC for a number of years. She moved to Stromsburg, Nebraska, where her husband served as mayor for several terms. Glenna has stayed in touch with friends at HCC through notes and letters, and she remembers the church fondly.

Bill Adams and his wife Pudge are a long-time HCC family. Born and raised in Wymore, Nebraska, Bill moved to Lincoln and began working for Good Year in 1952. Pudge was also working at Goodyear, and the couple married in 1955 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October. Bill retired from Goodyear after 35 years, and Pudge retired after 33 years. The Adams' have two daughters Cheryl Griess and Lisa Wefer. Cheryl got her start leading a church youth group at HCC, and she is now a Youth minister in an Omaha church. Lisa works in the Assessor's Office. There are three grandchildren. Two granddaughters are teachers, and the grandson works at a large bank in Chicago. Bill and Pudge are uncle and aunt to Jean Holt.

Adult Sunday School Teacher George Buell is well known at Havelock Christian. George grew up on a farm near Murdock, Nebraska. He was the middle of 5 Buell children to attend Murdock schools, and he graduated in 1944. In January of 1945, George joined the Navy. After the war, he attended the University of Nebraska for awhile, along with helping with the family farm. He met a pretty gal from Elmwood, and you can guess the rest of the story. Married in 1952, George and Maxine spent their first few years farming. George began working for the railroad in 1955; and in 1956, he decided to make railroading his full-time career. The couple moved to Lincoln in 1966, where they raised their family, one daughter and seven sons. George has a multitude of interests, as exhibited by his many interesting hobbies and collections. He and Maxine enjoy a wide variety of activities, including musical concerts, historical displays, political events, Bible studies, and keeping up with the grandchildren. He retired from the Burlington Northern on his birthday in 1990, after 35 years.

The Rev. Max Nelson is celebrating a May birthday on the 27th. Max served as pastor at HCC for three years and is now serving the church at Elwood, NE. Max is world famous for his outstanding cooking ability, especially when it comes to homemade soups. We discover he also had talent that he kept hidden from us, as he is now playing the piano when the occasion calls for it for the nursing home services. (We should have known, with his mother being a musician.) Max is married to Cindy, who is a special education teacher in Morrill, Nebraska. We send good birthday wishes, Pastor Max.

Mikel Hefner is coming up on birthday number 2, and already he's a mighty special member of the HCC family. Mikey is the son of Julie Hefner and grandson of Deb and Joe Herman. He's active in Music for 2's, Children's Church, and lots of fellowship activities. He likes to ride on the new HCC train, and he takes a real interest in playing the piano. We expect great things from Mikey!

Just give Joe Herman a challenge, and he can figure out how to do it, from building an indoor stairway from the first to second floor in a house whose only stairway was on the outside, figuring out intricate balancing and design of artistic stars and geodesic domes, making the computer jump through hoops, and helping Grandma Deb take care of the kids. Joe has a degree from UNL in Anthropology, with a particular interest in geology as well. His favorite place to explore geological formations is Hawaii. Joe is father to Daniel and helps grandparent Cody, Ami, Mikey, and Emily. In his spare time, he works at Kawasaki AND Walmart AND serves as Financial Secretary for HCC.

Sabrina and Samantha Nimmich will be celebrating on May 30th with a big move back to Nebraska. The girls have been living in Connecticut for the last couple of years. Samantha's son is the almost-two-year-old Mason, and Sabrina is mom to Braydon, who turned one in February. Sabrina works at Children's Place and Samantha works in a video rental shop. It will be great to have Sammy and Sabrina and their families back in Lincoln soon.

Best wishes to all of our May birthday folks!

FYI

Two new members join Havelock Family -- Welcome, welcome to our new members Cody Hefner and Lane Phillips. Cody and Lane were baptized on Easter Sunday morning and were served their first communion by the Elder Mentors John Dale and Mike Yost. What a blessing these young men have already been to our congregation. We look forward to supporting them as they mature in their faith.

HCC joins in baby dedication -- It was a joy to welcome little Emily Elizabeth Hefner as her family and friends surrounded her in a service of dedication on Sunday morning, April 23rd. Emily's family of support included mother Julie, brothers Cody and Mikel, sister Ami, Grandparents Deb and Joe Herman, Great Grandmother Claudien Egbarts, Uncle Daniel Herman, friend Larry Burns, Aunt Mary Bickford, cousins Hope Bickford and Jarred Bickford, and mentors John and Jean Dale. Emily already knows the feeling of supporting arms from the church family, and we all look forward to her growing in wisdom and strength.

Easter lilies filled the chancel -- Thanks to all who provided beautiful Easter lilies to decorate the sanctuary. Plants were provided by Elva Schuster in honor of her family; the Worship Department, in honor of HCC members; Pastor Giovanna Arnold in memory of her parents; Susan and Gail Hanneman in memory of Susan's parents Alberta and Roy Marsh; Maxine and George Buell in memory of their parents; Jack Rosecrans in memory of Joyce; Minnie Stephens in memory her mother, her husband Dwight, and Joyce Rosecrans; Mike Yost, in honor of his family; and Jean and John Dale, in memory of our parents.

  • Pastor attended workshop in Schuyler.
  • Elders looking at mentoring Members of the Diaconate who can grow into Eldership.

  • Thrasher Foundations staff have studied our building plans and think they may be able to avoid disturbing duct work; however, no guarantee.
  • Board seeking analysis from Board of Church Extension for possible loan to fix settling.

  • Roger Hammons to chair Memorial Committee; Judi Yost will chair Pastoral Relations Committee.

How about that Easter Egg Hunt and Butterfly Picnic??? Wow! Thanks to Deb Herman and her team who delivered fliers, to Roger Hammons, Mike and Judi Yost and the girls, and everyone else who helped get ready for a big day. We had 104 kids and families show up for the event. The train had its first run, and was it ever popular! Everyone from the kids to the kitchen help enjoyed a ride. Thanks to Pastor Giovanna for the idea, for all the organizing, for her wonderful story with the kids, and for her faith that if we'd open the doors, "they would come." They really did! And they came on Easter morning too. It demonstrates (in case we had any doubt) that we have a wonderful neighborhood that is receptive to the message of welcome, caring, and hope that we have to offer through our Lord.

Update on Special Day Offerings -- Financial Secretary Joe Herman reports that our Week of Compassion Offering for 2006 stands at $471. The Easter Offering received so far is $453. We could use some help matching our 2005 Easter Offering of $585, not to mention our goal of $600. If you haven't had a chance to participate yet in either of these offerings, your gifts would be greatly appreciated. Every gift helps; there's so much good work to be accomplished.

Lift chair needs a good home Wilma Staberg has asked if anyone in the church needs a nice lift chair. She'd like to see the one she has go to someone who needs it. If you are interested, please give Wilma a call.

In Our Church Family

We continue to keep Judy Nyhoff and her family in our thoughts following the tragic deaths of Judy's nephew and two children in a car accident recently. We pray that God will bring strength and comfort to the grieving family.

We send bouquets of greetings to our members who are shut-in: Keith and Elaine Althouse, Don Riblett, Jim Donaldson, and Tony and Katheleen Lass. Keith and Elaine, we hope you are able to smell the lovely trees from your windows; Don, we hope you're over that spring cold and feeling chipper again; Jim, we trust you're keeping the folks in Utica in line; and Tony and Katheleen, we hope you're enjoying the spring days.

My, how we miss Alta Perkinton. She's home now but still doesn't have her strength back completely. We hope with warmer days, you'll be able to get out and come back to church, Alta.

It was good to see Mike Staberg back in church on April 23rd. Mike has been a bit under the weather lately. We're so glad you're doing better, Mike.

We are keeping Beverly Helmkamp in our thoughts and prayers these days as she continues her recovery. We understand that she has made a move to Legacy Terrace as of April 25th. We hope you continue to improve, Beverly.

Katie Robbins is also looking to make a move. She plans to settle at Cotner Center. The process of cleaning out a home of many years is no fun. We hope you'll soon be settled and enjoying your new surroundings, Kate.

We are missing Fran Plumb, who has been spending a lot of time lately helping care for her mother and her sister. Her sister, Sue Ann Good, has had a real struggle with heart problems in the last few months. Fran, we hope things improve for your family soon.

Jean Holt considered it a mixed blessing that she had a bad cold and her surgery had to be delayed. We're so glad she was feeling better from her cold and was able to enjoy Easter with us. We're hoping the surgery goes well when it does occur, Jean, and that you'll be back on your feet soon.

What a wonderful birthday party we had with Elva Schuster on April 23rd! She looked pretty as a picture, celebrating 90 years in style. The church family enjoyed yummy chocolate and white cakes and punch and had fun singing to Elva. We hear she plans to travel to Arizona real soon. Best wishes, Elva.

Congratulations to the Woodrum family with the graduation of grandson David Leung from UNL on May 6, with his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. David's parents are Bill and JoAnn Leung.

Hannah Buell, daughter of Dawn and Clay Buell and granddaughter of Maxine and George, is graduating from home schooling this spring. She has been selected for a Regents Scholarship to attend UNL in the fall. Congratulations to Hannah.

[Editor's note - if you have a graduate in your family, please let me know for the June Contact.]

Kudos for April go to . . .

Minnie Stephens, who stepped in when Jack Rosecrans was sick, helping with the Maundy Thursday service at Bethany and the Easter morning breakfast. We're glad Jack is doing better, and what a blessing Minnie is.

Jean and Ron Uarich also lent a hand on Easter morning to be sure we all had a yummy breakfast.

Dori Yost for the beautiful new Easter banner for the sanctuary. Be sure you take a close lookthe details are really lovely.

The Yosts and the Seiberts, who worked so hard to have the HCC Choo Choo ready in time.

All who helped with the Butterfly Picnic and Easter egg hunt.

In Closing

We serve a Risen Savior, He's in the world today!
