Max's Musings
How does one say good-bye?
Well, in the "The Sound of Music",
the kids sang a song that started: "So long, farewell..."
In another movie, "Fiddler on the Roof," the daughters
all said good-bye in different ways - crying, assuring each other
that they would meet again, and so on.
In real life we see some of the same things.
I have already assured some of you that if I am in town for a
visit that I'd stop in and worship with you and say hi. You have,
as a church, already started 'remembering'. There is a book on
the back table for people to put those memories into for review
in those times of looking back. I'm sure that at the pot luck
dinner after church on the 25th, there will be some tears.
There are some other signs of the good-bye
process, as well. A few people have withdrawn; I'm no longer
a part of their world of the future, so they begin pulling back
their contact and interaction with me in a process to prepare
them for the reality of that future. Some have a difficult road
ahead in that they must somehow say good-bye to me while looking
for a replacement for me. (Max, I'm sorry to see you go; by the
way, we interviewed a really good candidate last night type of
split.) Others are "soaking it up." Knowing that time
is short, they linger a little longer with the hug or handshake
or just stand with me when the words end.
I guess there isn't 'a way' to say good-bye.
Each time is a different set of conditions and emotions. Each
time finds us in a different place within ourown lives that we
experience the same feelings of not knowing quite how to respond.
So, we end up crying or holding on or avoiding or making a quick
exit or talking about visits to come that we may never see or
sharing times of common experiences
or....
To you I say: let it be known that I will
miss you. Let it be known that I wish and want and pray for only
the best for you. Let it be known that even though I will be
absent from you I will think of you often and wonder how things
are going. Let it be known that I count the time with you as
good. Let it be known that though I cease to be your minister
at the end of this month, I hope our friendship will
continue.
God's blessings to each of you.
Love & peace,
Max

Food Pantry Dedication Sunday is September
4 - Cereals and boxed meals are
always needed - things that are easy to fix. Anything you would
enjoy yourself is also a good guide for picking up an extra thing
or two to share. Every item helps. Thanks, HCC, for your caring.
Music for 2's
- We have some mighty precious little folks that are old enough
to begin singing. Beginning September 4, we'll have a little
music time for our youngest choir from about 10:15 to 10:30 am
at the front of the sanctuary. Youngsters in the 2-4 age range
are welcome, and Mikey can join too when he's ready.
The New Adult Choir Season gets underway Wednesday, September 7 - If you
enjoy singing, we have a chair just for you. Come help us make
a joyful noise. Rehearsals last just an hour and begin at 7 pm.
We note that an interment service
will be held at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery at 10:30 am on Saturday,
September 10th, for Raleigh Bell, the brother of Pearl Tincher.
Education Recognition Sunday is planned for September 11 - With students and
teachers beginning a new year, it's time to recognize the importance
of education. We'll be honoring our church school teachers and
students, along with those beginning a new year in our public
schools and universities.
Communion will be taken to our shut-in
members on September 11 - Due to
Labor Day, we'll be scheduling our visits for the second Sunday
in September. This is always a special time for catching up with
friends and sharing the presence of our Lord.
The Nebraska Region celebrates five
years with Dr. Kenneth W. Moore
- We are cordially invited to attend a celebration of the first
five years of Ministry of Kenneth W. Moore, Regional Minister,
to the people of the Nebraska Region through The Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in Nebraska. The celebration takes place
Sunday, September 18, from 2 to 4:30 pm, at First Christian Church,
430 South 16th. A short program will be held at 2 pm, with a
reception following in the fellowship room. Ken and Susan Moore
and their son James moved to Lincoln in July, 2000.
Farewell Reception for Max and Cindy set for Sunday, September 25 - Following church,
we will gather for a covered dish dinner to honor Max and Cindy
and wish them God-speed. Cindy has already begun the school year
in Morrill, Nebraska, but she'll be back for the week-end, so
we'll have a chance to say good-bye to both Max and Cindy.
F Y I
Thank you to all who
helped make the July 23 Carnival a Success! It wouldn't have
been possible without each of you, although we could have done
with a little less help from the weatherman, who blessed us with
a very toasty 100++ degree day.
It's not an exaggeration to say that if you would like
a list of all who helped in some way, just take the church directory,
start with the A's and go through to the Z's. It was a total
team effort - from designing, printing, and distributing of the
flyers to donations of food and materials for the Carnival and
the Bake Sale, to setting up, holding the events, and cleaning
up after the last train whistle.
The Carnival Proceeds will be used by the Friendship Bridge Fellowship
Team to fund future community outreach activities. At it's meeting
following the carnival, Friendship Bridge tentatively decided
to hold a carnival again next year, although a cooler day will
be requested!
Ice Cream Social creates lots of excitement - With great signs and enthusiastic advertising,
the crowds just kept coming to HCC's door on Sunday, August 14.
And folks were not disappointed! They found generous servings
of the most delicious homemade ice cream (in an outstanding assortment
of flavors), toppings, and other desserts so yummy you can't
even describe! Besides that, there was plenty of good fun and
fellowship. Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed and
helped on this event. We're excited about the neighborhood folks
who came and are getting better acquainted with our church, as
we open the doors and spread the good news that HCC is a fun
and welcoming place to be. (Plus we made $206.70!)
A Note of Thanks from Susan Marsh - This arrived on June 6, and was inadvertently
missed in the last newsletter. Susan writes,
Dear Pastor Max and HCC Church Family,
Please share my thanks with everyone at HCC. Mom's memorial service
was so nice and it would not have been possible without the help
of the pall bearers, Rick Bickford, Roger Hammons, Mike Yost,
and John Dale; Pastor Max's great service; Jean's great musical
talents; and the ladies that helped serve a yummy lunch afterwards,
I remember seeing Maxine Buell, Anna Peacock, and Jean Holt.
I know I won't remember to mention everyone by name, but you
know who you are, and you are appreciated.
A special thank you to Rick Bickford
for sharing the youth group stories about camping with Mom, I
didn't know!! Thanks to Joe Herman for rearranging his schedule
and being on standby as a pall bearer for me as well.
Most of all, I want to thank the entire
congregation for all that you did for Mom every Sunday morning
as well. She was able to continue to worship with you for as
long as possible, and that meant the world to me and to her.
Keep up the good work. I will continue
to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers. We will continue
to visit, and we will especially try to make it to all of the
special occasion dinners. The ice cream, pancakes, potatoes,
and spaghetti feeds are too awesome to miss. Take care, and God
bless you all.
Sincerely,
Susan Marsh Hanneman

required for the Region to help us find an interim pastor. Members
of the committee include: Mary Bickford, Jean Holt, George Buell,
Gene Seibert, Peg Hutchison, Virginia Woodrum, Dori Yost, John
Charles, and Shandra Yost. Mike is also sitting in to assist
with the process. We need to keep the committee in our prayers
and provide whatever assistance we can for this important task.
Congregation shares HCC special qualities during fellowship and favorite hymn singing time
- On Sunday, July 24, we enjoyed singing some of our favorite
hymns. Roger Hammons led us in lifting up special memories and
qualities about HCC that have had special meaning for us over
the years. Roger has distilled our comments into the following
array qualities that could help us affirm our core values:
"As Havelock Christian Church is dedicated
to furthering the ministry of Christ, in the spirit of our restoration
heritage and New Testament teachings, we embrace the core values
of...
Cooperation

Reconciliation Offering to be received
September 18, 25 and Oct. 2 - The
mission of the Reconciliation Offering is to help eliminate the
root causes of racism by nurturing seeds of justice. Half of
the reconciliation offering stays in Nebraska to help with local
efforts; the remainder is used to support grants and projects
aimed at eliminating racism and providing leadership training
for those who can help in this effort. In past years, Nebraska
funds have helped support the Lincoln Indian Community Church,
which provides ministry to people from many different backgrounds
in our city. Please give generously.
In Our Church
Family
Our hearts go out to Jerry and Karen
Cunning and family with the death
of Jerry's mother Donna Cunning on August 25th. We're keeping
you and the family in our prayers, Jerry.
Doris Johnson,
a friend of the our congregation, passed away on July 28th. A
celebration of Doris' life was held at Southview Christian Church
on August 17th. We want to keep Doris' husband Allan, who is
at Lancaster Manor, in our thoughts, along with Doris' church
family at Southview. She will be greatly missed.
We extend our love and sympathy to Bob
Swanson was the death of his mother
Mary Louise Swanson on August 9. Louise's memorial service was
held at her home church in Peoria, Illinois on August 27th. The
Dales were able to travel to attend the service and extend the
sympathy of the Havelock family to Bob and his family. If you
would like to be in touch, Bob's address is 1992 No. Waterfront,
Unit C, Columbia, MO 65202.
Elmer and Wilma Staberg are having kind of a rough time. Both have spent
some time at Bryan Hospital in the last couple of weeks. Elmer
is home now, but Wilma remains hospitalized. We're praying for
a speedy recovery for both of you.
Elva Schuster has also been hospitalized recently with severe back pain. A call Monday
night found her home and taking it easy. We hope you continue
to do better, Elva. You're certainly in our thoughts.
Howard Sewell was hospitalized this past week too, from the complications of
a nasty infection. He's back at the Ambassador, but still not
feeling too perky. We hope things improve soon, Howard. We're
keeping you and Irene in our prayers.
Edna Green is regaining her strength at Haven Manor-College View North (4800 So. 48th,
68516). She is in good spirits and hopes to be able to return
to her home soon. I'm sure she would be glad to hear from HCC
friends.
We send greetings to our others who don't get out regularly. Nellie and Jim, it
was so good to see you in August. We know Jim is ready for the
football season to begin. Nellie, thanks again for letting us
join you for such a nice lunch. Howard, we hope you're improving
day by day. Jessie and Don, we know you're looking forward to
that 5th anniversary! Congratulations, you two!
We continue to keep our service personnel in our thoughts and prayers. Those serving with
ties to the HCC family include Missy Bickford, Jeremy Bickford,
Jonah Krause, Vern Blackwell, and David Buell. We're praying
for God to hold you in the palm of his hand.
Virginia and Les Woodrum are concerned for the well being of those suffering
from the damage of Hurricane Katrina. Virginia has a number of
family members who live in the New Orleans area. As of Monday,
she has gotten word from one niece who has at least located the
other members of the family, although they have scattered to
many parts of the region to find shelter. Virginia, we're keeping
your family and all those who are suffering from the storm in
our thoughts.
We understand that Karen Buell, a friend of Frances Young's and Ardelle Boardman's,
and an occasional guest at HCC, has suffered a heart attack.
We're praying for Karen's return to health.
Things are almost too quiet at the Mike
Yost household these days. Both
Shandra and Kayla are off to college at University of Nebraska-Kearney,
and we hear Judi is keeping her sanity by going on a cleaning
binge. Better keep those shoes picked up, Mike! Best wishes for
the new school year to Shandra, Kayla, and Judi.
Our thoughts are with Cindy Nelson as she starts her school year in Morrill, Nebraska.
She has a place to live and at least part of the furniture in
Morrill, along with a challenging new position. We're happy for
you Cindy - we miss you, but wish you the best in the new job.
We're looking forward to seeing you on September 25th. Max is
in our thoughts too, with the separation from Cindy again and
the challenges of handling the rest of the move without her.
Our hearts are with both of you.
It's countdown time again at HCC - another retirement is in the offing. Anna Peacock
has just about completed 40 years with the University of Nebraska,
and she's going to take her well-deserved retirement in just
a couple more weeks. Congratulations, Anna! We know you're excited.
And speaking of countdown's - last year, we were looking forward to Jean and
Ron Uarich's wedding. On Sunday, August 21, the two of them renewed
their vows before the church family in celebration of their first
anniversary. They're still practicing; but you know, I think
they're getting it right! We're so happy for you, Jean and Ron!
It was a joy to have Joyce and Calvin Weeks and Minnie Stephens
with us too to help celebrate the special day.
Another special occasion was observed
on August 21 Teresa and Steve
Miller marked their 35th wedding anniversary! The Millers were
married in the old East Lincoln Christian Church. We know there
are lots of special memories. Best wishes, you two!
Deb and Joe Herman
are looking forward to some time away in HAWAII soon!!! Wow,
have a fabulous time, you two. You deserve!
